Would that meter be able to detect an 8 ft long metal object at 12 ft deep?

No, that's intended to measure ground resistance, not objects in the ground. Look up Ground Penetrating Radar.

Ok, I thought it would work the same as those geo-resistivity meters that go for a few grand but might be limited to shallower depths. Anyway thanks for clearing that up.
