SHASTA LAKE – Shasta Lake provides water to Sacramento and the crop-rich San Joaquin Valley more than 300 miles to the south.
It’s California’s largest reservoir and considered a jewel by anglers — many unaware of the mercury in the lake and in the fish they catch.
Mercury, a legacy of the Gold Rush, has worked its way into the food chain of Shasta Lake, with levels beyond what is considered safe by the Environmental Protection Agency, state tests have found.
Yet no advisory has been issued to people who fish the lake, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Sunday.
Change may come this summer when officials at the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, the state’s lead agency for environmental health risks, begins re-evaluating 2007 state tests to determine whether the reservoir’s game fish pose a danger to human health.
Officials could decide to list an advisory in the booklet given to all anglers who obtain a California freshwater fishing license, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation could then consider posting warning signs along the lake.
Methlymercury limits set by the EPA for safe eating are 0.3 milligram per kilogram. Data from the 2007 state tests reveal bass with levels just under 0.5 milligram per kilogram and catfish at more than double the limit.
By comparison, testing of rainbow trout from 2002 and 2006 shows safe levels between 0.1 and 0.2 milligram per kilogram. Brown trout, a commonly eaten predatory fish typically higher in mercury than rainbow trout, could prove to be the deciding species as officials decide if fish in Shasta Lake should be listed as contaminated.
“That’s why we need more testing,” Brodberg said. “We don’t like to issue an advisory for one fish. We like to have at least three species of fish and nine samples of each of them.”
Runoff from sites once active with gold mining is the main source of mercury in the lake. Gold mining requires mercury, and there are many shuttered mines around the lake.
The widespread practice of gold panning is most to blame for leftover mercury in streams that feed into lake, said Jay Thompson of the Shasta Historical Society.

"Gold mining requires mercury" and "the widespread practice of gold panning is most to blame"- Another fine example of responsible well researched journalism. Unreal, the lies and misinformation perpetuate.

OMG!!! THE SKY IS FALLING!!! THE SKY IS FALLING!!! Yet another example of the big green money machines "Alarmist Journalism". Spreading fear across the land in an effort to advance their agendas. VERY poor reporting with no effort made to check facts BEFORE publishing an article. Who owns that worthless rag of a paper now? They should be cited for creating unfounded public fear. Freedom of the press is NOT a license to spread lies.

Jay Thompson of the Shasta Historical Society is an ignorant fool who promotes misinformation. It is not evident that JT was ever a miner, or for that matter the accuracy of the assertion.
JT's bio is here Shasta man gains new career, outlook with Historical Society - Redding - a wannabe historian whose credentials are an "A" in a Community College course.

Mercury was always used in an amalgamater, very commonly used in sluices, and seldom used in pans.
Panning was not "most to blame", get it right or shut up. (Yes, the mercury is a problem - just not the panning, or modern dredging, etc. but the old dredges and long toms all had lots of mercury.)

Pisses me off that we can't get one article that exposes their fear mongering fraud picked up by the wire or any affiliates yet these clowns write what ever they please without any truth or actual knowledge and everyone picks it up and runs it

nothing new here. just about every lake in california is contaminated either by nature or man. some fish absorb more mercury than others, so if you eat bass, browns, or bottomfish, theyre high in mercury. rainbows and salmon are the only 'clean' fish. halibut in the ocean are high in mercury. explain that fear mongers!

Eating fish with mercury won't hurt you. Already been proven. Selenium bonding gets rid of it.

Fear mongering (or scaremongering or scare tactics) is the use of fear to influence the opinions and actions of others towards some specific end. The feared object or subject is sometimes exaggerated, and the pattern of fear mongering is usually one of repetition, in order to continuously reinforce the intended effects of this tactic, sometimes in the form of a vicious circle.[SUP][citation needed][/SUP]

Funny fact is Trinity river NF EF has the Altoona Mine, mercury, and is the worst I've seen ,except the Carson River, in 60+ years of mining. No mention at all .What a hoax. John

It's from all the Mercury used by the gold panning SCUBA divers of course!

Thanks for the contact info Hefty, he will definitely be getting a letter.

Guess the following mercury mines within 25 miles of the lake woudn't suggest natural mercury deposits would it? This is just the west side, honestly I got tired of writing and think this more than makes my point!

We as miners all know that the greenies just love to show the info that will make us look bad in an effort to make it look like it's our fault. I feel that if anyone that gives SWORN TESTIMONY and omits important little facts (like the number of Mercury mines in the area) should be charged with perjury and thrown in jail. By not giving law makers all of the facts to work with, they're only furthering their own agenda(s). In this case, bilking the public out of more tax dollars with which to line their own pockets.

Just the fact that there is naturally occurring Mercury from Cinnabar is something that should have been brought up. To blame miners for all the Mercury in any area in that part of the state is wrong and nothing more than false science and anti-mining propaganda. All miners in every state have a stake in getting the truth out to the public in general and the law makers in particular. We need to educate everyone we can so that good policies can be made instead of laws that only benefit a set of groups that have their own agenda. Miners have become better educated over the last few decades. We have been learning not only how to be more effective in finding gold, but also in how to mine and be true stewards of the earth at the same time. The days of slopping Mercury all over the place are long gone and every miner that I personally know will clean up their areas to the point of being in better condition that it was in when they started operations. A single 4" dredge operating for a week in contaminated streams will remove more Mercury within that week than all the Green Groups have removed since they started this dog and pony show. For them it's all about the money now and has nothing to do with the environment.

The newspapers, news wires and all other news publications want sensationalism. Attention grabbing headlines and stories are what they will publish whether true or not to increase their readership or website hit rates. Integrity, What Integrity? That is a trait that is surely disappearing from this world. If we want to pin the enviros a5#@$$es in the dirt, we need to provide the media with sensational headlines and news worthy pieces against them backed up by facts. Fight their propaganda/lies with sensationalized, attention grabbing TRUTH!!
