The Smith went out of it's banks this morning. Logs, stumps, trees with root balls all a flowin. Go ahead and click on the extended forecast...it says the same thing. :laughing7:

I could hear the surf crashing on Kellogg Beach...and it's over three miles from my house! So yeah, it's a rockin and a rollin here. Come on sunny Tuesday!

They're NASTY weeds that have these three pointed seeds that will pretty much go right through anything except plate armor. The seeds kind of look like a Goats head hence the nickname. Get into a patch of them in bare feet and you will be hating life in a big way. More bicycle tires have been killed by them than any other sticker. Even the so called "Thorn proof" tubes can't stand up to them.

As a kid growing up in Southeastern NM, I only wore shoes in the winter or for school, etc. The resulting shoe leather calluses along with bike tires were no match for goatheads.

What are Goat heads? Can't say I ever heard of them the only goat heads we've got run around on four legs.

Miserable little suckers. And they hurt when you step on them, and if a tip breaks off, it just hurts even longer.
The beating you get when the dog brings them in and the little lady steps on one in the middle of the night hurts even more.

And they are darn near impossible to kill off completely. They need very little water and the seeds can stay alive in the ground for years and years and years.

Karen and I got out this afternoon to see the levels and destruction. Who do we see but delnorter himself up to his elbows cleaning out a culvert on North Bank...AND getting paid to do it!

JK Mike and tyvm for the 12+ hours daily yer puttin in to keep us safe and mobile!

Thanks for the kind words here on the forum and on the bridge that day Jeff.

Maybe you folks would like to hear of a busy day for a highway worker. An old highway worker!

That day, last Sunday was pretty crazy for sure. I'd worked 12 hours on Saturday keeping smallish rock slides cleared and got to bed around 10 PM. A little before 3 AM Sunday morning the boss calls, "gitty up Mike, I'ts all going hell fast"

I jump in some clothes and Caltrans rain gear and head out in my Dodge Diesel with new 17" rims and all terrain Toyos, comeown! . I head north on Lake Earl Drive, but the water is too deep to drive through just past Redwood School. I turn around and go to Kings Valley Cross Road, barely getting through deep water there.

I head north on Hwy 101 and then onto Hwy 197. About a mile east there is a small (about 50' long) fir tree across the road. It is only about 12" in diameter where I run through the limbs and over it. There's worse things needing attention. At the new bridge (where you talked with me that afternoon Jeff) the water from the creek was about a foot over the top of it. The guy there with me, when you stopped and talked, was one of the Engineers who designed the bridge to handle any flows. He just couldn't believe it couldn't handle the water volume, so I pointed out all the logs and other debris piled up on the edges of the road and sides of the bridge. There were about 4 more places along 197 with pretty deep water over the road from plugged culverts.

Once I hit Highway 199, things weren't too bad. Quite a few limbs in the road (these can be pretty big when they are from large Redwood and Douglas fir trees) and some small rock slides. Again there was a lot of smallish flooding from plugged drain inlets to culverts under the road. People drive this road pretty fast, even in bad weather, and hydroplaning is a real hazard. 18 mile northeast things got worse on the four lane section of road north of the town of Gasquet. In the area where the steel cable curtain drapes the vertical cliff above the road, a large amount of the mountain broke loose, stretching the curtain out and passing under it, covering all four lanes of the highway.

Time to head out for work, I'll finish this this evening, maybe!
Mike

Lucky you! They are thorns that fall off bushes and land right where you are about to step/ride. Shaped like a goats head, sharp and tough :(

The security lights worked for most of the day as the rain bands passed thru BUT there is FINALLY hope. It is the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere where it is the shortest day of the year. December winter solstice in Crescent City, California, U.S.A. is today...Monday, December 21, 2015 at 8:49 PM PST

Ok... the big freaking rock brings back some memories. We had one winter that was extremely rough. A dam on a farm pond to the east of town let go and that took out the next one and the next one etc etc etc. No exit from town to the east. High water on what was usually a dry creek bed to the south kept people blocked off that way. (no getting to the Casino) Slides had blocked off the Escondido/Ramona grade and a house size boulder came down on the highway just missing a car full of kids. Took CalTrans 48 hours to blast the rock into small enough pieces to move.

Hey fellow prospectors, sorry for the delay in writing up the finish to my story. I'm just not getting any time off from work with these storms. 12 hours of plowing snow yesterday and going back in a few minutes. Merry Christmas,

Mike

Now remember Jeff. We need to keep that white stuff out of my desert. Too many Arizona folk will go into shock if it starts falling from the sky again!!! :crybaby2: Maybe I should be hoping that it hits here. Might get some of the snowbirds to fly further south. :icon_scratch:

Well the temps here dropped like a rock down a Klondike well! Went out to feed our covey of Quail this morning and found a 1;2 inch of ice on the sluice tanks, pans that had some water left in them produced "Ice Frizbees" and the wind was cutting through everything like a chainsaw through butter.

I had planned on going out to do some detecting today but I'd have had to layer up till I looked like the "Sta-puft" marshmallow man. Jan went out ONCE about mid morning and when she got back in informed me that I'd be alone on ANY outdoor activities. It's looking like it's not going to be warming up here until the end of the week. Here we are in the desert, freezing off body parts and they're running around through Central Park in short sleeves! I tell ya... There just ain't no justice!!!

I know Jeff. I saw that we were 10 degrees warmer than you in AZ all day today. Here...50 degrees, the sun came out, the winds laid down and omg...it was pleasant once again! And...just got back from a road trip to the mountains. Most melted at lower elevations but reports say we are already at 110% of avg snow fall so all is good. Even better...the sunset colors on the southern horizon @ 5:30 tonight. We have officially returned to light gathering mode here which means I am finally seeing some light at the end of the tunnel so happy days are here again. :hello2:  :headbang:
