I these sitting in a pile hiking in southern califorina I grabbed a bunch of them because I thought the shapes were odd View attachment 1515001 View attachment 1515007 View attachment 1515009 View attachment 1515019

Look like they belong in the cubic crystal system. You did well to collect them!
Could be garnets. (only thing I can think of right now) If so - a knife won't scratch them.

But I advise to go to a local university or lapidary club for a second opinion.

I found a few rocks in Omaha Nebraska. The one is about 9x6 inches and pretty heavy, sorry don't have a scale with me. They seem to have a bunch of gold flakes or what looks to be gold flakes and my earth magnets stick to it but it's not a very strong pull. They are not too difficult to break and looks like there are layers to it. The other one picture is quite large and I've broken it open. Thanks for the help everybody.
Figured out how to load pics. 20171113_102239.jpg 20171113_102154.jpg 20171113_102204.jpg 20171104_215428.jpg 20171104_215300.jpg

Tempted to call those granitoids.
So those flakes aren't gold or its not a rare meteorite from a golden planet far far away and I shouldn't quit my job and sail around the world. Lol.
Thanks

Well, no. Although I suppose you could quit your job and sail the world - just won't get very far. How does Canada sound to you? :laughing7:

I found this rock in a river bed (that is usually flowing but it's controlled by a dam many miles away)....it rings up on the At Pro as 42 - 50 in All Metal Mode and roughly 60 in a regular setting. Is it some form of slag, coal, coke etc. ? There appears to be some forms of pyrite layered in it in the bottom pic. This was the only rock in the area like this. It appears to be half assed hard but seems a little lighter than it should be. Any idea?

Magnetite? Hematite?

That kind of makes sense there are several iron ore mines within 10 miles of the area....lots of hematite and siderite around there. I guess the rock could have migrated down the river somehow. The rock is non magnetic....if that makes a difference.
