Possible hotrock? Check to if it's weakly magnetic., Looks metamorphic.

Look like they belong in the cubic crystal system. You did well to collect them!
Could be garnets. (only thing I can think of right now) If so - a knife won't scratch them.

But I advise to go to a local university or lapidary club for a second opinion.

Quite a bit of pyrite indeed. I'd keep an eye out for gold.

The colors are due to secondary copper minerals forming from oxidization. Neat!

Could be one of several things. Amphibole, pyroxene & tourmaline is what I can think of right now. Neat find!

I found a few rocks in Omaha Nebraska. The one is about 9x6 inches and pretty heavy, sorry don't have a scale with me. They seem to have a bunch of gold flakes or what looks to be gold flakes and my earth magnets stick to it but it's not a very strong pull. They are not too difficult to break and looks like there are layers to it. The other one picture is quite large and I've broken it open. Thanks for the help everybody.

I found this rock in a river bed (that is usually flowing but it's controlled by a dam many miles away)....it rings up on the At Pro as 42 - 50 in All Metal Mode and roughly 60 in a regular setting. Is it some form of slag, coal, coke etc. ? There appears to be some forms of pyrite layered in it in the bottom pic. This was the only rock in the area like this. It appears to be half assed hard but seems a little lighter than it should be. Any idea?

That kind of makes sense there are several iron ore mines within 10 miles of the area....lots of hematite and siderite around there. I guess the rock could have migrated down the river somehow. The rock is non magnetic....if that makes a difference.

I've got a very similar stone. It occurs when two rocks are in an eddy current in a river. One rock spins around and wears a hole in the other.



I think that's what you've got. The eddy current rocks can be very large.
