And I love to play Stump the Chump!:coffee2:
Hello there,

Here are a few chunks from one if the lodes on my claim. Any insight would be appreciated, thanks. IMG_20171230_113257.jpg IMG_20171230_113500.jpg IMG_20171230_113644.jpg IMG_20171230_113227.jpg

I found a few of these with my metal detector today in a popular stream for panning. There used to be two gold mines on the Stream. They didn't ring up as iron on my metal detector, and they're way heavier than your typical hotrock. I'm not betting on there being any gold in there but it would be nice to know what they are. I can take more pictures when I get home if need be

Yeah but they're only slightly magnetic. And only at certain spots on the rock. There's a lot of pictures that match them online that are claiming to be meteorites. I don't know how much I believe that. Here's some more photos. 20171230_223105.jpg 20171230_223116.jpg 20171230_223127.jpg 20171230_223139.jpg 20171230_223150.jpg

They absolutely do not look like meteorites....see here https://www.google.com/search?q=meteorite+id+test&enablesearch=true. Look up streak test for hematite and magnetite. Rubbing on the underside of a toilet tank is how I do mine.

Unknown Rock

It was found on a dirt road in North MS.. About 3 ft down in a red clay wash. It resembles our sand stone but it's black where ours is red. It is shaped like a log with a knot on it and it's hollow all the way through.

Well, it's sedimentary that's for sure. But I can't with certainty tell you what it is.

Found this in North MS. It was about 3 ft deep in a red clay wash. Its texture resembles that of our sandstone but its black with a lot of small shiny flakes (quartz ?). It looks like a tree if you stand it up and is hollow all the way through.

Anyone want to take a guess at this?

Was thinking it might be pyrargyrite as it has been found in the area I was hiking before but it is magnetic. That really has me confused. Hardness somewhere under 3 because I can scratch it with a calcite crystal but its fairly close in hardness. Not 100% sure if it is just a layer of this crystal on top of country rock or if its a big chunk of it - weighs in at about 3.5lbs which seems rather heavy for this sized rock.

You're confused because you are testing a rock - a rock is made of more then one mineral, in general.
Magnetite is a common accessory mineral, hence making the rock magnetic..

Do a streak test. I'm thinking it might be mica of some sort.

Do not agree with the mica theory but I did check a piece of the country rock and it is magnetic also - might be right about that. :)

As for the streak it varies between a burgundy and ochre sort of color. Not quite red not quite orange. Bit washed out in this photo I snapped because of flash: https://i.gyazo.com/6833d5304f95ed687e8577333b1976a7.jpg

This is another piece that seems to be mostly the same material: Top and Bottom

It's okay to say you don't know what it is, sport.

Giving me a (blurry) pic of a rock and asking for insight:
Like giving you pic of a gold pan full of dirt and asking if there's any ore-forming processes where that came from.

Do the hardness test, with a knife. Make sure you don't test the rusty (limonite) coating.
The burgundy could indicate presence of hematite. Mica will be easily scratched, hematite will not.

Typical mafic igneous rock. High in iron content.
