Has it and if so, how long did it take? Was it one big find, or a number of small ones?

Mine has and it took about six months. I had one find that paid about half and then several small ones that put me over the top.

I am sure many new to this hobby will be curious.

Hell!

The cost in batteries alone doubled the overall expenditure...

Yes it has ,and I got it half price used. In 2005 started finding much more silver at low tides, and very very old rings than previous 3 which got worn out 10 years @, tesoro waterproof is very nice and I have voted for you many times in US and A. 2012-01-27 11.05.21.jpg 20120127_110816.jpg 20120511_105751.jpg Have a good MDing day! My first year I bought a ACE 250, found a couple of rings and a 22K gold necklace which would more than pay for it if I wanted to sell it. Just can't part with it yet

I have found that acre for acre, the most produtive ground is saltwater beaches (rings and things). Over 40+ years my detectors have paid for themselves. Some, a few times over. Is it a living? A firm no. TTC

Heck yea -Radio shack 1975- out the box 2 musket balls. Since then Ive been addicted.... Own private land which turned out to be a pre revolution colonial town with road, carpet baggin paper company destroyed physical evidance. coins from the early 1700s, it has been nonstop this time of year. Infact today I hit a new area I found while hunting before Christmas. First dig was a British crown pin, an assortment of colonial buttons and more british military. One coin from 1722, only started to hit. No one has a clue this area exists - Studied the area for 20 yrs, history has forgotten this area. Its always the site, went from arrowheads to DFX and bounty hunter!! Great question

Probably took me about 10 years before my first detector paid for itself! I bought my Fisher in either '90 or '91 and for that first 10 yrs I never really got into metal detecting. The past 10 yrs or so I get out as much as I can, so it has probably paid for itself a couple times over and then some. Last year I went to my local metal detector shop and traded some of my finds for an Ace 350. Gonna get a Tesoro this year the same way, so all of my detectors will be paid for with finds.

Mine have all paid for themselves, except my newest ones, if you don't count my time! Just a matter of luck for the rest. A few nice rings and most will be in the black too. The two box and hand scanner might take a little longer!

Nowadays a better question might be: "Are you covering your GAS when you go out?" LOL!

Inherited my dad's CM 6000D2 in 1984 so every penny is pure profit...bought Sears version of 5000D 3 years ago for $115 on CL and have dug $400+ and a gold ring I sold for $100.

Bought a used pristine MXT two weeks ago for $275 and already have two 14k rings and 5 -.925 rings and a bracelet along with about $75 in clad...so I am way ahead and the future will buy my PI machine for this summer!
