delta 4000 / ace 250 - used BH and many others too
the rifle that was made for was the lever action Winchester model 1873--- 38 - 40 ( old center fire cartridge black powder gun -- 38 cal bullet over 40 grains of black powder load )... later on they altered the load when smokeless powder came on the scene but kept the familiar 38 /40 markings on the box and cartridge head ---the model 1873 guns were made from 1873 to 1923 --a 50 year span --of course the guns were used after 1923 since folks in the depression era used whatever they had to hunt with (late 20's and early 30's)..

they could be thought of as the 30/30 of its time ...a popular deer and mid sized game rifle

Colt Single Action Army 1873 on- used this cartridge too. Popular during 1st generation, 1873-1941. May still be available from the custom shop today...
