I found a field that use to have a old church on it in 1901

The problem is it has an old bob-wire fence around the whole field. There were no real houses around the field so how would I find out who might own that property?

You should be able to find out right from your computer.

Do a Google search for your county's name, plus "records". For me that reads as
    "Skagit County, records".

Most US counties keep a site with tax records and property ownership
records, and they also usually have maps so you can find the tax ID
number for the parcel you're concerned with.

Great suggestion - only problem is you have to know the address - anyway - Truth1253 - did the search for ya (because I have absolutely no life! ): St Tammany Parish Assessor contains the ability to search, etc.

I go to the county auditor site for my county. Many county auditor sites have a map, somewhat like google maps that will let you know where the tax bill is sent to and who owns the property.

Up here, we have Plat Books that show who owns each parcel of land, their contact info, how many acres, the shape of each parcel, etc. I would assume there are such books for most areas.

We're lucky in the sense that we get a free small version of the plat book for our county every year. The full-size book is the size of a road atlas.
