I have had a Garrett AT pro for 4 years now and it works great on land and in freshwater, but is very hard to ground balance and is very sensitive in salt water. I try to use it in salt water but I cant get any solid signals. It is time for me to buy a new detector that is very good in salt water. I have been looking at detectors like the whites surfmaster.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for a detector that is meant for beaches and saltwater?

There is nothing better than the Minelab Excalibur.
Mine paid for itself in it's 2nd season.

Agreed, Nox 600 or 800 unless you need to go below 10', then get the Excalibur.

For the money and performance the Minelab 600 or 800 may be a great choice. If you plan on diving then the Minelab Excalibur, Used Garrett Infinium (Garrett retired this model)...etc.

Good Luck on your new detector search.

Wow, Garrett discontinued the Infinium LS? That's nuts. That leaves the Sea Hunter and the ATX for salt water use until the Manta comes out? :BangHead: What are they thinking?

Although I do not personally own one, the Makro Kruzer or Multi Kruzer has been getting great reviews for salt water detecting.

What is the difference between the equinox 600 and the equinox 800?

The At Pro won't work well in salt water unless you can put up the noise etc. Works fine on dry sand but not designed for salt water. On the other hand the Equinox 800 and 600 are designed for salt water

I have both the Equinox 800 and the Excal II. In the water I only go chin deep, even that gets risky when motor boats cruise by. For now I'm sticking to the Excal for water hunting.

And of course, I love the Excal and won't be abandoning it for water hunting. The Excal is a long proven machine, and it can be modified to a straight shaft (very desirable for about $100, and a pin point mod for around $175 more). Get's a little expensive that way but good gracious the changes those mods make!
