So, I found a bird band while on vacation and finally got around to reporting it. When I submitted the information online the website gave me a pop-up warning asking me to verify the information before submitting it because the bird band (number) was "unusually old". I got excited and double checked the number. I noticed the website kept auto-correcting the number by placing a zero infront of the 3 digit prefix. Anyway, when I submitted the info and got the report it said the band was from 2003?

I feel like the "write" stamp must predate 2003. Anyone have experience reporting bands or knowledge about dating them?

INFORMATION FROM OUR FILES:
Species: Common Loon
Date banded: 07/03/2003
Banding Location: BRADLEY, LINCOLN COUNTY, WISCONSIN, USA
Age: HATCHED IN 2002 OR EARLIER
Sex: FEMALE

I found one in NW CT and reported it. It was from a small hawk. The band must have been in the ground for over 10 years. Very interesting information.

I found one back in 1974. In the mid 90's, I was at an event where they had a net out, catching birds and banding them. I showed them the band, but they couldn't figure out the info on it. Now, with the internet, I will have to do some more research on the band.

I found a big Canadian goose band about 5" deep in some woods in 2015.
Mine also was a rarer, older one, evidently.

This thing evidently got up into the air sometime because it flew south 700 miles to my area in Kansas where I found it.

Your info is correct, mine does not have a 0 on it either but their computers always seem to add one to the front.
To them a 2003 band is old....to be more precise your loon band is considered rare.
Look at how many have been banded and how many of those bands have been reported.

Here is some info on all the birds they have banded and bands that have been encountered since banding in 1960 up to 2011.
