On the other side of the Island is Mathers beach. It sometimes produces. If you can get a homeowners permission, good luck, in the old town the yards date back to the early 1800's, tho' the majority of the land is hardpan. Maybe you will see some street cconstruction, hunt the diggings. Other than that there isn't much, it's name means "bone island' because the Indians couldn't bury their dead in the shellrock. There's another public beach above Big Pine Key.
For barring, pick capt tony's over sloppy joes. Or the Green Parrot. Walk up & down Duval st., Ricks is good, you can go out on the second floor landing and look down at the revelers with your drink. Fat Tuesdays margaritas are a little expensive but big and strong.
