Hey everyone, I'd love some input on this piece. First, I found this a few years back while walking my dog and looking for antler sheds. It was the end of winter, we were pretty far back in the woods. While walking thru an open field I noticed a large black rock that just looked out of place. When I picked it up it was very heavy for its size, And I noticed there was grass/vegetation under it, not dirt, which suggests it was recent to this field. People wouldn't typically be this far back in this forest and this rock was too heavy for kids to be throwing or playing around with. So I brought it home and examined it. It's definitely part of an even larger rock. My theory is "IF" it's a meteorite , while making its entry it heated up so much that it expanded and broke into pieces. There's the outer contoured side that's rusted and has lines on it. The sides that would've been the interior and has tons of metallic flakes to it too. And I magnet DOES stick to it. Any info would great appreciated. Thanks everyone.

From what I can see it looks like a good canditate for a meteor. Thats awesome, local collages by you? If so you could try there, they may know for sure.

Dimedigger, when I first got this I heard tons of joe dirt jokes from my sister, haha.
Terry: I've looked at dozens of meteor photos and I'm still on edge of it is/isn't. The rock magnetite looks similar but magnetite has a magnetic field itself. I've tested this with a piece of metal on a string for the least resistance. There was zero pull, which from what I can tell rules out magnetite.
There are community colleges in my area. I never thought about that but that sounds like a great place to check with.
