Can someone please help me by identifying this cocoon (I think)? It is about one inch long and 1/2 inch wide, it's very hard, but very light. It was attached to a post on my deck. My wife said she has seen them before but always smashes them with a hammer. It looks somewhat similar to a fossil.

Yes, it is eggs laid by the praying mantis, and I will definitely tell the wife to stop smashing them. Thanks for the help, I love Tnet, everyone is so helpful and informative, thanks again and happy hunting.
