Another nice piece Steve, You can see the wear/polish at the tip. Thats neat.

I don't think it is a fkakeing tool.I would expect to see more damage to the tip.Unless it was for specific strokes.I would think it used more like a reamer.

i was thinking that the very end of it could possibly have been used for making the notches
in the small prairie side notch arrowhead
if you look close you can see wear on the end which has been thinned for some reason

you know i always appreciate and value yer opinions
anybody and especially frank, smurufett, and flint digger take note of the 6th image #0442
do you see the marks scratched into the bone on the very thin side edge of the last 1/4" of the end of the tip
these are what i think were made when the maker was manufacturing plains side notch and esp. jaw notched points
I have heard that the best (and the most) points were made by the older women who were highly experienced at this art
what do you think?

Steve, I see the scratches you are talking about in the photo, and I can see where it would be possiable to make scratches in the tool you are working with while notching a point, that is just my thought.

Lars, can you match up some of your small plains sidenotches to the end of the tool and get a pic. I can see how it could be used for making the small notches, just put the two pieces of the puzzle together and get us a picture

Nice find there Steve!!! It could be a Flaking Tool and it could have used as a Chisel too. I have one very similar that I just got in a small collection I bought that came from a Woodland site around Kettering Ohio.

You can see it in the upper right hand corner of the tray and see it has the same tip as yours. The close up didn't come out very well though.

Has the snow melted off you place yet? I'm ready to see some of your killer finds.

Flaking or working tool anyway. The scratches are interesting. Antler is very hard, and it takes more than you would think to wear it away.
