After work hunt

I was able to hunt for an hour or so after work today. This is a small beach I hunt that is covered with bricks from a court house from 1690 I believe the bricks are holding the points eroding out of the banks from washing out to the river but it can be challenging to find stuff mixed in with thousands of broken bricks .... Especially the jasper points. Here is a pick of the beach I looked on the top layer upon arrival and only found some flakes and a tip so I used a metal rake and pulled the top layer than splashed water onto it from the river. I found this really nice little Levanna that is still razor sharp and another broken one about a foot away.

I found a few odd ones today as well this one is all but finished but there's a chunk left still. Makes you wonder if it was used to grip it while working.
I have found quite a few points broken in half but none like this

I also found a few others the grey one looks really old as well as this other one.


Was definitely the best day I have had in a while and hopefully will be back soon. I can't really dig past 6" and sift because you hit a thick layer of clay that wouldn't pass through a sifter so I'm gonna stick with this method for a while.

Says a lot about how active they would have been in traveling and trading that's a good 3 hour drive from me. (Eastern shore , Maryland) there's has been a few recent posts from Philly area that the materials and finds are identical to what I find which makes sense if they came across to the coast and traveled north and south down the rivers.

Tore it up on that look. The jasper one is a killer triangle and the other that is broken would of been speechless if whole with the red tips. The grey one has a stack on it they couldnt remove or it would of ruined the point. Probably used it as is which makes for an interesting view of it for the hafting. You did very well and that clay layer I wouldnt mess with it helps keep your finds above its the hard pan and I doubt any has gone below it. rock

It sounds crazy but the closest call I had this year was walking within inches of the biggest beaver I have ever seen .... I had my yellow lab with me that weighs 70 lbs and it made him look small. Luckily it just stood its ground and I let it be.

I wondered about beavers. Most of the ones we have are muskrats but once in a while I will see a beaver and wasnt sure if they would attack or not. I know they like to slap the water with their tails which can scare the crap out of you when you are enjoying the quiet.

Nice finds there Arrow86, sweet triangle, and there seems to be a significant site there. That side notched point sure is broken in an unusual way. Is the base ground much on that one?

I figure I'll just throw this out there for you or anyone else who hunts the shoreline sites. I went to an artifact show on the lower Delmarva several years ago, and one of the guys who hunts the bay and river shorelines often, had his rig there for folks to see. He used a heavy duty mesh screen that was about two feet wide, and maybe 10 inches tall, that curved inward. It had a heavy bar on the bottom two foot long side, and places to attach a rope on each short 10 inch side. He used about a 25 foot long rope that would attach to these points. What he would do is walk out into the water about waist deep and drop his screen rig onto the bottom, then with the middle section of the rope behind his back, he would walk backwards up onto the shoreline. This rig would catch all the gravel and artifacts in the mesh, and drag them up to where the waves gently washed on shore. Having the rope around the back made pulling the rig much easier, and the wave action would rinse the mud or sand away and allow him to clean out a large area of shoreline relatively quickly. I thought it was a cool idea but have never tried it myself. HH

Thanks red , yea I am convinced from what I have seen there's a campsite to be found whether I am on it or just real close is what I'm trying to determine this fall. That point you asked about is broken pretty unusual it looks like a plow break but no chance from that but there's thousands of bricks and large rocks that caused a lot of damage besides then eroding out of the banks I am told a tractor pushed the bricks around a bit to protect the shore line. The base is definitely ground here's a few better pics I attached. That's a good idea you mentioned about the drag net. I have to wait a bit longer before I could try something like that. The entire cove from the shoreline out atleast 100 yards has thousands of lotus plants growing. They are a pretty site but I hate them most of the debri on the beach is from their giant leaves.
