Greetings.

Found this in St Augustine Fla near the "fountain of youth" when I was a kid. Dragged it around in my moms purse and its been a proud part of my collection for 35+ years. Obviously a cannon ball but anyone have any thoughts on age? Could be 1600s or earlier. Ponce DeLeon died in 1522 so who knows?

Cheers to finding treasure of all types.

I would think a counter-weight for a gate. Maybe re-purposed >? CannonBallGuy IS the man who would know.

CannonBallGuy will be able to tell you. He will need exact diameter and weight. I had one that turned out to be a counter weight. I went to the local machine shop and they gav me the diameter. Then to the post office for an exact weight.

Once you have these you will know.

You might try posting in the What is it section. Again you will be asked for weight and circumference for a positive I.D. Good luck.

I don't think it's a cannon ball. It appears to have two protrusions on it which would not allow it to shoot out of a barrel.

Thanks All. Haha re the doll. I collect folk art and it was a gift. The Ball is quite heavy and weighs at least 20-30 lbs. yes. There are protrusions. Would they have ever been sanded off?

Happy Hunting and Happy Holidays.

Cannon balls were not cast with protrusions to be later sanded off. I don't know what your ball was, it is kind of big for a governor ball, although I imagine it could be one from a larger steam engine. Like the others say CBG knows what most old iron balls other than cannon balls were used as. Mill balls don't have the protrusions either so that counts them out.

It's possible

Your find may be a part of a restraint (ball and chain). I found a Plantation Scale Weight (40lbs)-to weigh rice etc-which also was used as a restraint. My relic is slotted. I'm trying to find out which plantation utilized this device (low country SC) and date (1700's-186?). It is pre civil war.
