Went gem sifting on saturday got this SMOKEY QUARTZ.. Want to get it cut but don't know how much it would cost... I was told it would be worth 30-50.00 per karat after being cut.. anyone know if this is true?? Right now it is 77.5 Karats..was told after being cut I probly would have 50 or more karats left. also anyone know the best cut an what would be the cut worth the most? I will be wanting to sell the stone after it is cut... Thanks for all the help!!

That's a nice little chunk you've found there. Not too shabby.

Normally, after you have that cut, you should expect that the size will be down to about 40% of the original weight. A lot is lost during faceting. I would probably expect to get a cut stone back weighing around 35-40 carats.

The value of the gemstone will then vary depending on color, clarity and inclusions. Lower grade smoky quartz stones are usually valued at around $10/carat. The value increases from there depending on the finished product. There is no real telling for sure how much it could be worth at this point.

thank you for your help... would you know how much it cost to get it cut?? I was told it was 15.00 each facet.. plus the fee to cut... I'm very new to this gem stuff any help would be appreciated

The price for cutting is solely dependant on the cutter. It varies.

For the best deal, it is cheaper to send your stones overseas to get cut. It is a lot more expensive to have your stones cut in the states.

i have a 38 caret columbian emerald i want cut. also i have a few 5 caret diamonds i could like cut also.not to mention my rubies...... which country should i send my precious gems to? ::) JK, sorry i had too :D
