If you are checking it in the house, go outside and try it. If you are outside, go to a different location.
You may be getting 60 cycle interference from a nearby source. Power lines, TV sets, power tools, and neon signs can raise havoc.

also check the connection where the coil wire goes into the loop and also into the control box. a bad connection at either of those places could cause what you are describing. come to think of it a bad coil cable could also. ???

After checking all the below, see if it has a coil cover that may have black sand inside it. Hold it still with the coil off the ground and move the wire at the coil and the plug. If the noise increases you need a new coil. If you have another coil, try it to see if the sound leaves. Inspect the coil for any cracks from using it without a coil cover.

If all this fails, Garrett can repair it cheaply.

Good Luck,
Sandman

Thanks to all for your responses. A detectorist in another forum told me that it could be the spring on the control box connector, that maybe went too far inside...Bingo! That solved the chatter issue!
