    It's definately Japanese in origin.

    And much later than the Edo period. During the Edo period, the kanji symbol looked like this:


    I would place your plate probably in the early 1900's. Maybe the Taisho period, around 1920 or later.

    Was it recovered from a shipwreck? Probably not. But you never know.
