Guess he didn't get to make his one phone call...
Because I found his 1911 Barber dime!!
I went back to the old jail site in town today for about a half hour, and noticed they had moved some more dirt around. Took out my Safari and went to work over a section they had previously scraped but scraped again. The coil went over a dirt clod and that sweet coin sound went off. I pushed the dirt clod over and there she was stuck in it and she's in beautiful condition.
I also got a 1925 and 1939 wheat pennies to boot, a fabulous tootsie toy sedan in rough condition, and some sort of copper cap, I think, with that old intricate design so common of early 1900s sites (although the design is hard to see from the photo). It has the numbers 3056 stamped on the inside, whatever that means, and it's a tad bigger in diameter than a silver dollar.
I feel almost cheated that I didn't dig the dime out of a hole, but hey silver is silver no matter how you come across it.
