Needless to say I was shocked to find out how few of these were minted. Found on old school grounds dating to the turn of the last century. The pics don't do it justice. I haven't done much to clean it other than warm water although the black residue seems to be coming off as I soak it.

Well it'd be considered "damaged" even if he DIDN'T clean it. Anyway what a first silver dime; congrats big time!

Fantastic Find!
You sure picked a good one for your first, so it was well worth the wait.

Sorry for the lack of detail in my post. The dime was only about 3 or 4 inches deep in a very dense pocket of clay, almost on edge. My camera isn't great for small objects but it looks like almost every detail is still there under the black areas. Has anyone seen anything like this? I almost want to say its tar or something, don't worry I haven't tried to rub it off or anything, but if anyone knows how to get rid of it, the coin looks to be in really good shape. Thanks for looking.

Be very kind with that coin, don't get the desire that I constantly have with my coins by over rubbing, let alone cleaning. Treat her with the love that you won't give humans.

I believe there is a big price difference with a environmental damaged versus a Cleaned coin... I could be wrong tho I'm still learning...anyone who would know for sure please post so I know

Even in poor shape the coin could be worth at least $100.00. But i would definitely see a coin dealer.

As if finding a Barber dime for your first silver isn't reward enough, you went and found yourself a key date! Congrats!

Hmm...yea I guess it depends on the extent of the environmental damage. Guess ya just gotta make a personal judgement call sometimes ???
