Been to this place a number of times but never pulled out any gold. The 4 aces poker ring was about 1 inch down and gave me a loud bing. I thought for sure my trash/pull tab. Then bam this lucky ring. It has no Karat marking. Does anyone have a guess to the karat? The other ring is 10K and has a date 1/20 and initials, G.F. >MH<. Do you think this is two different initals? I wonder why the MH does not have the dot's after each letter? I guess its a wedding ring. :dontknow:

The 1/20 is the thickness of the gold fill ( 1/20th of an inch ) not sure what the <MH> stands for..perhaps one of our jewelry gurus knows.

MH (multi-hammered) is often used to refer to the type of finish on the ring - hammered instead of smooth. Sorry, can't see enough of the ring to really tell if that is the case here.

Anyway, nice finds.

So all three have helped identify the marking.
1/20th= thickness
Gf= Gold Filled
MH= Multi-Hammered.

Well, since GF came out of the depression as people could no longer afford the 'real thing', it is no more than 60 years or so old but probably much newer than that.

1/20th 10K means the total content of the ring by weight is 1/20th or 5% of 10kt gold. Since 10kt is 41.7% pure gold, 1/20th GF would contain 2.085% pure gold. If the ring weighed 5 grams, it would contain 0.10425 grams of pure gold. Gold at today's price when I checked was $36.64 per gram so there you have (theoretically) a ring with a value of $3.82.

Now, I say theoretically, because gold dealers will not buy GF items. Only a refinery will purchase and they usually require a minimum of 10 pounds because they have to melt and do an assay to determine the exact content and then they will offer no more than 80% of gold value compared to 95% or so on true karat gold.

I'm sure that's way more information than you wanted or needed, nor is all of it guaranteed accurate. My wife says that's the way I've been the way more than 35 years she's been listening to me ramble. ::)
