I had an interesting hunt today. The area lakes are lowering for the winter so I went to a spot that was good to me last winter. It wasn't long until an old man walking his dog came up and told me that I wouldn't find anything there. I always laugh it off when someone tells me that.... Well, then he told me why. He said "they haven't been in the water all summer because of the TVA ash spill"... Well, I have to say that was the first time I half way believed someone when they said I wouldn't find anything. I knew it was going to be slow and I would have to count on finding what I missed last winter. I wandered off to the edges of where I hunted last time and got a strange signal and dug up the mold. The sediment is only a couple of inches deep on the lake bottom so I can't really tell how long they have been there. If you have an idea what kind of mold it is please let me know because that's the first one I've ever found and I'm excited about the find. I also found a heavy ring with an eagles face on it and there's no markings at all on it. If you scratch it is shiny like silver but it's too heavy for silver. I included a picture of the old fort a few miles away from where I hunted. Thanks for looking.

I modified this post because of the way I worded it. I didn't realize that I made it sound like I was hunting around the fort. (that would be a felony) Thanks you all...

Re: Bullet mold or sinker mold?

Wow, thanks for all of your input. I was hoping it was a bullet mold but I never thought I would find one. My dad found one about 40 years ago and it's been on my want list ever since. I'll hook it up to the electrolysis and see how it turns out. I'll post an after pic. Thanks you all.

You are lucky not to get arrested hunting around Southwest Point - if that's where you were. People have been arrested for hunting there - But nice finds !

Howdy drdave,

I wasn't hunting anywhere around the fort. I just stopped by there to get a couple of pics. I'd love to hunt there but it would be hard to dig with handcuffs, lol... I drool every time I go by there just wishing, lol... Do you live close by there?

DANGLANGLEY

I went back and reworded that part of the post. Sorry about that.

Why would it be illegal to hunt near this fort?

Here's a little history about the fort. It's on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Fort was a military post established by General John Sevier under command of Captain John McClelland, in the territory of the United States, south of the River Ohio to protect the settlers and from the Indians (1792-1807). Fort Southwest Point preceded creation of the state of Tennessee.

Kingston is rich in history and its river heritage is evident by the graves of many riverboat captains buried in the Bethel Presbyterian Cemetery. It's on the National Register of Historic Places. Once a major steam boat hub on the Tennessee River, today the waterfront is used for recreational enjoyment. Kingston was founded in 1799 and is the second oldest city in Tennessee. It was the state capital for one day on September 21, 1807, and remains the county seat for Roane County. One of the seven antebellum courthouses remaining in Tennessee is located in the center of Kingston.

Re: Bullet mold or sinker mold?

I hate that spill and the way TVA is handling everything. I have tournament fished up your way a time or two. Beautiful area. Nice bullet mold by the way. They are late this year getting the water down. Happy Hunting sir.

Re: Bullet mold or sinker mold?

Be careful with TVA land, including the rivers. TVA is strict, especially with recent events. The TVA metal detecting permit only allows you to detect near docks in the river system. I've heard too many times of people getting arrested near your area and then having the local media print a story about it.

Just be careful! :icon_thumright:

Thanks for the advice. I am very careful to only hunt where the permit specifies. It looks like they would be thankful that we recover lead from the lakes if nothing else and let us detect anywhere we want. I would guess that I recovered about 20 lbs. of lead last winter alone. Have a good one.
