Hey gang,

Guess what? I finally got a chance to actually metal detect today!

We (my son and I) went to the town soccer field for a couple of hours. There is no activity at this field this time of year, so we had it all to ourselves.

Besides the usual clad, pulltabs and canslaw, I came up with a really neat little silver ring. It's marked STER J A and it measured a small size 3 on my mandrel.

Oh, by the way, this field is hunted by other detectorists, but they left this one for me. ;D

UPDATE: I did a google search on the hallmark and it turns out to be a James Avery ring! WOW!
New pic added.

Thank you ALL for your kind comments and replies!!!

Though you didn't show the maker's mark JA could id the ring as a James Avery, a well known and well regarded Texan jeweler. Google it.

As per txpathfinders' suggestion, I did a google search and matched the hallmark and this is a James Avery custom made ring!

I am really jazzed about finding this ring! A little history on James Avery....

In the early 1950's he decided to leave his teaching profession to design and sell jewelry full time. He started with $250 in a garage in Kerrville, Texas. Word quickly spread of the "craftsman in the hill country" and gradually people found their way to his door.

In 1957 he hired his first employee and mailed his first jewelry catalog. It was 16 pages long and featured 39 items...all hand made!

In 1965 he incorporated the company now known as James Avery Craftsman Inc., and in 1967 he built his company's current headquarters on 20 rustic acres in Kerrville, TX.

Yes it is a JA, I can tell by the three candles. I find lots of those in South Texas. Charm bracelets, rings, etc. Mostly 925 silver.

Nice find. I looked and it is not in their current inventory and nothing on eBay, but it is real for sure.

Paul
