Well, the two old home sites that I got permission to hunt were a bust. I went out there six times so far and the best thing I found was another WWI button and an old ax head. So yesterday I decided to try a small stand of woods on base. After digging an insurmountable number of pull tabs I got a good dime signal and pulled up a 1948 Rosie. After that two Wheats (1957, 1950). I was actually finding coins instead of pull tabs and spent rounds. I kept at for another 30 minutes and got the old nickle signal. I started not to dig it due to a pouch full of tabs but if you don't dig it you never will know. So down I go and at about six inches out pops a coin. It is covered in dirt so I rub some off and see a hump. What! This can't be, but it was a buffalo nickle, finally. There is no date and is a little worn but I don't care I finally found a buff. NNow if I can get that elusive Indian head penny my want list will be complete. Whatever else I find will just be icing on the cake. In the last hour I found four more wheats. One is a 1930 the others are unreadable. I went back there today but the radar interference played havoc on the ACE so I quit after about fifteen minutes. I'll have pictures up soon I hope.

Oh how well I know the sound of pull tabs, as do we all. That first Buff sure feels good though, don't it? I've been tided down under a huge load of paperwork for 4 months & had to fight off that nasty virus that was going around. Weather is turning nice now & only one more week of paperwork to go. Keep digging & detecting. The BIG ONE may be the next signal that you dig. Congrats on the Buff.

Those Buffalo Nickels can be a little elusive. I know even at sites where we find 1800s coins - no Buffalos. They tend to pop up when you least expect it. Good job.

Great job on finding that buffalo. I think that is one of the hardest ones to find.

Congrats on the first buffalo. That's how to do it though. That next one could be a keeper. It has happened to me like that before. I dig 50 pull tabs and say I can't dig another. Go to dig one more and find a wedding band.

The excitement is large at that point.

Re: Finally something besides pull tabs! My first Buff!

Thanks everyone for you kind replies. I'm trying to hit as many areas on Pope as I can before I leave for Guam. I have a little over a month left here and want to see what else may turn up before I become a beach searcher for the next two years. I love the older stuff but I am looking forward to seeing what the beaches hold in store for me there. I may even brave the Boonies and try for some WWII relics but the snake threat there has me a little on the causious side for now. I will post pics soon.

Congratulations on the buffler,I guess its good to have to work for it.My first good coin for the year was a buff in a local park, that got Me enthused, but dince then it,s been a let down maybe a dozen wheaties some clad,no silverand at least a hundred pulltabs. To keep my enthusiasm I have to remind myself that whoever searched the park before used High discrimination so the IHPs,nickels and Gold, must still be there as well as the deeper coins.HH,Mont

Re: Finally something besides pull tabs! My first Buff! (finally the pics)

Hey all, I finally got my pictures taken. Some are from the old homes some are from the base.

The bullets are all from base and range in size. (Those are for you Nana ;D)
The flag staff top was found in a park in Raeford, NC
The valves and gears and such were found at the homes.
The two nickels are my buff and a V nickel. Sorry about the coin picture quality my camera is a cheapie.

If anyone knows how to make the pics clearer or can sharpen up the images to see some detail feel free to do so. I'm not that smart to do it.
