I hit this buck today while detecting at an old lumberjack town. These are small villages with 10 to maybe 300 folks still living in them today. They were originally occupied by lumberjacks ca. 1860's to 1930's.

The northern most part of Michigan has many such villages and I hunt them.

By the way, this buck is really very small. It's smaller than a dime and was 4 to 5 inches deep. It's an old style pin.

Also, can U ID that snap thing in the second picture? I can't figure out what it was (is)???

And too, does anyone know of a book or website on old civilian buckles? Maybe some I dig are horse buckles? Anyway, I dig loads of these of all sizes. Most are very deep and made of iron.

Thanks

Thanks, that's the best answer I've received yet. That makes sense too.

I sure like the buck. Can you tell what it is made of? Does it say anything on the back? HH Sorry just curious. Burdie.

Pretty cool pin badger. Any site that got that much iron is old. Good luck at the site.

Hey burdie I don't know what it's made of yet. I'd guess brass because if it were gold it would come out bright and shiny like a gold chain I just dug about an hour ago. I'll do a post on that by itself tonight.

I can't read the back yet but I'll soak it for a while and see what it says. If the depth means anything it's pretty old.

Anytime, Badger. As I've said before, when you stumble as often as I do, you're bound to stumble onto something now and then! ;)
