Hello!

My buddy Ron dug this thing today. He found the medallion part first at about a foot deep! Around the perimeter It reads, CHICAGO MIDLAND PROVINCE - CHRISTMAS 1908 . . . and in the middle it reads, BLOOD AND FIRE - THE SALVATION ARMY.

Then just few feet away he dug a copper plate thing that I think this medallion came out of! The medallion is about 62 millimeters in diameter.

Anyone know what this thing is?!

Most likely Midland was one of the districts for the S.A. in the Chicago area. During that time frame there was a hugh movement of the Holy Spirit within the churches across America. Fire signifies the Holy Spirit; and the blood, God's redemption through Jesus Christ. So the medallion was probably given out during a revival or something. Very nice token or medallion, I'd love to find one of those.

The oldest official emblem of The Salvation Army is the crest--as shown in the center of your find.
The meaning of the crest:

The cross: The cross of the Lord Jesus Christ
The "S": Salvation from sin through Jesus
The ray on the outside of the circle: The Fire of the Holy Spirit
The dots: The Truth of the Gospel
The swords: The Salvation War
"Blood and Fire": The Blood which was shed by Jesus for our sins and the Fire of the Holy Spirit
