Cru'Dad's Successful Mission...

Cru'Dad is off work right now, so can explore which fields we need to be on. He spent about 4 hours close to a Roman Site we did last year. This is my fav type of site, which I call a transitional site, as it has occuption from the Bronze age & Iron age (Celtic) & continues into the Roman. He tried a couple of fields & came up with some real good stuff.

Jetton
Roman Coin
Belt Stiffener
Edward I Hammered 1270s :)
13th C Annular Brooch (missing pin) :)
Plus a Roman Period Knife Handle :headbang: Very heavily influenced by the Celtic's with a womans head (everyday image not the usual God etc..), so I would class this as Romano-Celtic :o (1st C AD?)

Beautiful looking knife handle Cru, you're Dad did well today! :notworthy:

Looks like bronze mixed with iron? :dontknow:

Would this knife have been a ceremonial piece or hunting knife? :icon_scratch:

Dave

It is bronze & the blade was iron :icon_thumright: (leashed out)

Good question, these are middle/high status blades for cutting/eating food like meat etc..(most people had a spoon with a pointy end to pick up with & a knife, not much use for forks) Only someone who had some wealth could afford a nice one like this. I think they used the folding types knifes for hunting, as they have open-work scenes of hounds & hares etc. Although probably had much bigger ones as well or used a dagger. The folding blades are similar to our penknifes but only had 1 blade, nothing much changes in 2000 years :icon_thumright:
Could it have been used in hunting, maybe, & a ceremony, well we will never know, as we are close to some springs

His father was great lucky to find this piece ,the art style is completely Celtic, but the utility is clearly Roman, I think it is an object of transition :o
