silver plated brass spur (circa 1775) which has the figure 8 loops with one set of link belts still attached for attachment to the leather straps passing around the boots instep. I hunted hard and unfortunately could not find the other set of link belts. I've seen a few of these spurs before but never have I seen one with the actual link belts still attached. This was found close to where we won our independence from England. I couldn't be happier to have found this!!! UPDATE: Upon closer inspection (and thanks to a few sharp posters) this spur is SOLID SILVER!!!! The belt links are brass which is why I originally thought this was silver plated. I can't believe this!!!!! HH Devonrex

I'm not trying to be a jerk or to rain on your parade. When was plating invented? In the distant past I researched plating, and it sticks in my mind that wash plating was invented in the early 1800's, 1830's sticks in my mind, but I'm not sure, and at that time it was such a neat deal they even plated brass. Wash plating iron buckles with nickle was an attempt to keep harness buckles from rotting due to the horse sweat. Unless I'm all wet, plating came along too late for your spur to be revolutionary war era. Hope I'm wrong, but you might want to check.

Unreal find! Check closely for markings, it had to belong to someone with wealth, maybe a very high ranking officer. What an incredible find! HH

fyi electro plating is from the 1800's but silver wash and gold wash go back to the 1600's, you have to look very close to tell, they used a group of chemicals to plate their pieces. remember all thos gold plated buttons from the 1700's we find. the wash plated items look alot like they were painted up close.

very cool find.

Thanks for all the nice responses! Just had a friend call me and they did indeed make solid silver spurs during the revolution. Most were made in England and were hallmarked and were worn by very high ranking officers. I'm going to wait until I speak to some more experienced conservators before i clean this spur any more. I am so curious to see if it does have a hallmark but I don't want to damage it. This was found in the same site as my French buttons at a depth of 12 inches which confuses me even more as to who would have worn it. Devonrex
