Found my 14th gold coin last Thursday night. 1849 D $5. A friend and I had been researching from old traveller and stage routes in our state. In addition to this beauty, I also got an 1825 Bust half. My friend got a 177x Spanish one reale, and a 1911 s barber dime from this site. Relics from this site are also shown here. Lots of fun!

63bkpkr, Do you mean the "Bill" who posted in reply #13 of this thread? If so, I answered him in #17 of this thread.

bfratta, I don't hunt with that screen mode. I prefer instead to hunt with the cursor on the screen. So I never really paid attention to that. The coin is all put away now in some displays, but ..... I'm sure someone on the net has done a listing of where all the USA gold coins read on the 00/00 scale. It will read at about where the beefier square tabs read. I say "beefier" , so as not to be confused with a more common square tab variety that reads lower. On the Whites scale (XLT, eagle, etc...) a $5 reads at about 48 or 49. Which, when you think about it, is a fairly high conductor. So .... for example .... you could even be knocking out nickels and round tabs, and STILL get a $5 gold.

silver-surfer, the "sound" of a gold coin will depend on the size (denomination), the depth and soil conditions, etc.... No one exact "sound", just like for gold rings: no one exact "sound", since they come in various sizes, tilts in the ground, depths, etc...

I've been hunting since about 1976/77-ish. The places to look are: Any place where pre-1900 coins can be found. For some reason, the west coast is better than the east coast. There are east coast hunters with SCORES of large cents, reales, busts, colonials, etc... who have never found a gold coin (or found only 1, etc...). Yet on the west coast, for some reason more are found.
