Roman Villa Site producing Bronze, Silver and 1700 year old Roman Gold Ring

Today i went back to the Villa Site where i found the Wolfhead Pendant. It was plowed yesterday and i had time till 5.00pm today. I was detecting the field while the farmer was planting potatoes... :tongue3:
It was well worth the effort. Still have to dig nails, the site is far from being clean. So lots of nails, lead, some scrappies, one Denarius, a beautiful condition Dupondius(?) (not identified yet), found on the last row for the day and as nearly the last signal 20 metres from the truck the golden Ring. :hello2: Other finds were a french Regimental button, roman sandal nail, roman bronze nails, one decorated, a first for me.:icon_thumright:
I talked a bit to the farmer, thanked him for his cooperation, showed the finds from the day and was invited to come back after harvest.
Here are the pics:

17 replies to a 2000 year old Gold Ring, and you wonder why half of the european posters have stopped posting, should have said it was a Civil war ring Westfront.

SS
I enjoy these CW finds very much!Saved history like we do over here! I wonder about some other finds made it up there, including my Gold Coins. These things must be rare!
Not like an old ring. Do you know someone who didn't take 10 or 12 Roman Gold Rings home every year?

Thanks for the vote and the IDs Cru!

No brainer in some ways, how many solid gold Roman rings turn up. This is only the 3rd I've seen on here & Dad & I have none & we breath Roman Sites.

I added some pics from this afternoon. Stopped by at the jeweler and it took 2 minutes to get this ring in shape again. It's just 13mm in diameter. Small womans ring or a childs ring. Must been a child with some rich parents then....

Perhaps we are simply smitten with awe--as I am--with these finds.
Don.....
Don you always reconize good finds......this is the last I will say on the subject, it's a bit sad when somebody posts a lump of junk, and gets over two pages of replies, and then look at this post. ( I had to bump it back up) Roman Gold Ring, Treasure is what we all dream of, this is Treasure...not a lump of rust. The Banner requires people to nominate the find, it should NOT be like that....enough said...sorry to rant on Westfront...great find again, cherrish it, it's already a banner in my book, and those who really know.:icon_thumright:

Good job on that!

Don't forget that the Roman fashion was not to wear it over the knuckle like we do, but just before it. Does it fit better now?

Good to see you back in the fields again Lu. I'll bet the dogs love it and the knee hates it. What is the bow tie looking thing and what is the design on the ring? I Can't quite make it out. Amazing finds and banner vote.

Hi Tim! The dogs had a great day out and my knee was doing better than expected. Could be because of the warm weather... The "Bow Tie" thing is a mount of some sort with 4 rusted off iron rivets on the back and the ring shows a ladies bust, head facing right.

Westfront, I am in awe and envy- you all get to resurrect the really old history. I wonder if the 'ladies bust, head facing right' could be a depiction of the original owner. It may have been given to a soldier, as a 'forget- me- not', by his sweetheart/ wife/ loved one? Did you find it at a known battle site? Just a thought- I always wonder how some things come to be where they are found. You know; the story behind the story. Speculation for the most part but what a GREAT find banner for sure- anything that old- without question. HH yelnif...

Cru'D's thoughts:

'Westfront’s ring may be more dateable than most due to the female hairstyle. These did vary significantly between centuries etc and could help. I venture that the date may be late C2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and early C3[SUP]rd[/SUP] as the hair appears to cover the ear and a far amount of the neck – from what I can see it is similar in shape and style to that worn by Julia Domna and Julia Soaemias so circa AD195 to 222.'

That poor wheat is embarrassingly young next to those great old relics!

It looks like it was just minted. That soil is very kind.

On the 2000 year old gold ring, I am simply in awe. I'm voting BANNER for sure. Killer Finds!!!
