I hunted a hill top park that’s been notable for decades as a ‘parking’ spot for the locals . My father-in-law used to drive his Model A to the top using the now abandoned part of the roadway. It was once a loop but now it is one way up and one way back. That pavement is still there but it is now part of the walking trail system. The foot of the ‘mountain’ is surrounded by an older residential neighborhood.

On the old paved road itself I was only able to find modern pocket change and keys. I then hunted the foot trails and wooded hillsides. My most notable finds were a 1919 Wheat Cent and then what turned out to be a Ten Cash, Pei Yang, Chinese Dragon Coin from the early 1900s. At first my heart was pounding because I thought I had scored myself a Large Cent! :unhappysmiley: Here is more info on it: Ten Cash, Pei Yang, Chinese Dragon Coin « Chinese Dragon Coins « Coins Section « SL Collectors Coin Blog.

Thanks for looking!
Nick

Well of course the 1919 penny was not dropped yesterday so it speaks of how long folks have been coming to the spot. One would think there would be more older coinage there somewhere. The amount of keys do not surprise me though the lack of much 'stuff' and I include all the non-coin targets in stuff, is surprising. Seems like there should be a tree somewhere or at least its stump that could be holding more targets. Best of luck with your hunting...............63bkpkr

Nice digs....I'd definitely make a few return trips there.

Good observation. It is a very big place with a lot of ground to cover. This hunt was a sampling to figure out the lay of the land and I didn't even hunt half of it.

That's my favorite from this hunt too. It has the 1919 Wheat beat by over a decade in age since it was minted between 1897 and 1906. Here's a better shot of the coin by itself:
