Silver Soldier's Dog Tag with provenance, Button spill, and more...

I managed to get out to the park this morning for a couple of hours. I wasn't planning on hunting, but I was in the area. I hopped out and hit the ground running. I detected a section I hadn't hit before, close to the street... and dug everything. I won't bore you with my pennies, or the bent spoon.

Refresh to resize my pics...

Here's the good stuff.

Sterling Soldier's Dog Tag (Lt. Col. CHL Sharman... What a life he lived! -- Provenance here: Col CHL Sharman CMG, CBE, ISO (1881-1970))

Old "Canada Post Office" buttons and solo military button spill

"88" Shamrock Token

Little gilted buckle and button

Chinese coin

Gold Plated Ring

Happy hunting!

I expect to see you in the news soon.

Awesome recovery. (nice batch of buttons too)

Righteous on the return. (thumb up...way up)

Crop your first pic. down to just the tag, and add it to the first post. That will be your banner pic. Oh yeah I voted.

Very nice find.

The hallmark indicates a London assayer. The date letter is 1916. Middle of the WWI. He must have got it whilst transiting throw Britain to the battlefield in France. The hallmark backs the history! - 'Promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in July 1916, he returned to France to command the 4[SUP]th[/SUP] Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery, the only artillery formation to accompany the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Division to France'.

Therefore, you can conclude that this man had this tag made in London sometime in Aug 1916 (or there abouts). The inscription was probably done by the silver maker.

Awesome, Crusader. Thanks for the info!

I thought that it may have been sent to him from England, but it makes more sense that he would have received it while there, en route to hell.

It makes perfect sense, because he had also been promoted & therefore would want something in silver to reflect his current status.

PS. Just voted this historic piece, its rare you can touch something nearly 100 years old & tell so much personal history about it & the individual. It might not be old in my scale but it would be right up there in my fav finds, if I had it. Big congrats, its a beaut!

I had one WWI tag (maybe 2) but both were aluminium, silver is special.

I am going to return it to his family... that I promise. Out of curiosity though, what would something like this be worth to the right collector? I haven't seen any online to compare it to.

They do come up for sale but not very often. WWI doesn't command the CW type prices so don't worry about it's $$, because its not a reflection of its historial interest.
I tried to return mine, but came to a dead end. I was kindly helped by a Aussie Tnet member but even with a newspaper ad we came up blank. It was a shame because we narrowed it to just 2 lines of inquiry. Good luck - returning it is a passion I'm still trying to fill & I would do it in a heartbeat.

CONGRATS - on your first banner.

I've being thinking about the value & its seems to me that in a 'UK' sale it might only make about £150, I have no idea what it would be in Canada because this would be the best place to sell, so maybe double that.

Thanks, Crusader! I finally made it up there... I better take a bloody screenshot! :laughing7:

That is not enough money to tempt me into doing anything stupid, that's for sure. I'll keep you guys posted with my progress.
