William and Mary farthing front.JPG William and Mary farthing back.JPG Just got back into this in August for the first time in 20 years (marriage, job and 3 kids took their toll on my free time). Being a new member I wanted to wait until I had something relatively cool to post. While the condition is poor (understatement) I'm thinking that I just entered the 1600's club! Decided to hit a corn field that had just been cut, since in the spring it was plowed for first time in 25+ years. Found a v-nickel on the surface in my first row and felt like it may be my day to get an oldie. This coin was found in the last plowed row where the dirt had spilled onto the adjacent undisturbed grass.

I studied a million pictures online and from the position of the hair ribbon and the few letters that look like "Gug" or something like that, I'm thinking this is a William and Mary farthing, 1694. I can make myself see the end of William's profile (his nose) and beginning of Mary's if I try. The reverse is pretty much destroyed except for maybe the very top of a 9 and a 4. It is much smaller than a penny or halfpenny. I'd love to confirm this if anyone has knowledge of this coin and date.

Thanks!

Not sure, but hopefully you can help. It measures at 22mm. I've never dug British before so I'm not up to speed on the sizing. I only know it's not a penny.

Easy when you know, as there were no copper Pennies of W & M, & 1694 was the only year they did this copper farthing.

There were copper halfpennies and farthings in 1694, but based on the diameter... you're correct, it's a farthing. Nice... you're the only other person I have found who has dug a W&M farthing over here in the states besides myself!
