1954 India coin in South Jersey

I was detecting a trashy area of my back yard. Lots of rusting bits.
I found this coin and hoped it was old but it was too thin for a nickel.
After a little washing I could read; "Government of India" on one side and "One Pice 1954" and a picture of a horse on the other. This makes me wonder was going on in my yard fifty years ago.

Nice find! different!

There are many reasons why we find so many foriegn coins in the U.S. I lived near Pease A.F.B. in Portsmouth, N.H., and we would find world coins on a regular basis, in schoolyards off base. Personnell traveling to and from other countries would always bring coins home from away. Their kids would then lose them wherever kids played.
There are even gumball machines that sell world coins at 25 cents at a wack.
