Trying like crazy to reach my goals of 80 old nickels and 50 indian head cents before the season ends. Old nickel #73 this morning was an unexpected 1882 shield nickel. Nice detail and a readable date for a change. That sucker was deep and not a normal nickel hit. Also dug indian head cent #45 for the year, which was a nice 1863 fattie in decent shape. Only other old coin I dug all morning was a 1909 wheatie...No S or VDB !

A fattie and a shield..... I'd be happy with that any day of the week. Nice finds.

Congrats. I have only 3 IHCs for the year... none are fat. I have no shield nickels. You have made me jealous, and you didn't even have to find a silver coin to do it. Good job!

Awesome finds. Glad you can still get out. We are supposed to have a few snow flurries this weekend, but I'm still not giving up on hunting.

I have found just one IH penny and sadly lost it (sad story) a few weeks later. Nickels are tough for me as most end up being foil or pull tabs. Because of my bad knees I tend to overlook those signals and look for the higher tones. I hope you not only meet your goals but exceed them.

Congrats on old nickel #73, I hope you reach your goal by the end of the year. Nickels almost never come out of the ground that good, you must have good soil, most of my older nickels, even old Jefferson nickel come out of the ground almost unreadable.
