I went to check out a new spot yesterday and came up with what I think is my finest silver find in 35 years of detecting. Yes, I did find a sterling knee buckle last year that is more historically significant, but not nearly as beautiful as this piece. I was hunting a pounded school yard looking for what others missed and came up with more nickels including a silver war nickel and the smallest silver medal I've ever seen. It started snowing and I wanted to give this new site a quick look. Only spent 15 minutes there, but it sure was worth it. Came up with this beautiful silver match case/safe. It's in remarkable condition with no dents and when I opened it up it looked almost new inside. Quite unusual for a ground find. My guess is it was made to be water resistant to protect the matches and it did it's job. I found the exact same piece for sale on ebay. Thanks guys. I'm still amazed at the condition compared to some other silver I've found.

Very nice find indeed, but that ebay asking price is a moon on a stick.

Stunning silver match box, congrats on the significant find! I could easily see how this would be your best silver find in 35 years. How do you think you came upon this piece when others before you (at the pounded site) missed it? Was it unusually deep?

This didn't come from the school site. It came from the woods at a new spot I was checking out. It's not far from a house built in the 1770's.

That sucker is awesome. No disrespect to CRUSADER, but I can easily see it bringing that kind of money. As a matter of fact, if you ever think of selling it, I would like a shot. Congrats.

That sucker is awesome. No disrespect to CRUSADER, but I can easily see it bringing some serious cabbage. As a matter of fact, if you ever think of selling it, I would like a shot. Congrats.

Beautiful craftsmanship on that find. I've seen them on antiques roadshow and in the treasure magazines, but this is the first one I've seen posted. Hope you get to work this site again and wish you good luck & happy hunting. I guess I'm a pack-rat, but I would not sell that piece.
