This morning's hunt produces cool 1700s sword guard, colonial coppers, and much more

I wanted to see if the field had been planted at the small, new site I first hit last week where I found the 1772 half reale along with a nice pile of buttons. Looked like the farmer had put down fertilizer but fortunately that was it. Gave it a go for 3-4 hours, but the ground was getting extremely hard. Seems like just a couple weeks ago it was so sloppy wet you couldn't go anywhere. I started doing a little gridding where I left off last time, and had dug a couple of buttons when I got blasted by a large and shallow signal that I was sure was a soda can. But I was totally shocked when an awesome colonial sword guard popped out, or at least half of one. I've found these before but this one had some very cool looking designs. It likely belonged to the Rev War captain that lived at the site per my research. I decided to take my time in the immediate area to see if any more of the guard might show up, and my efforts were quickly rewarded with 2 more pieces that basically completed the guard. That was definitely the find of the day. Later I hooked up with a Va halfpenny, and right before leaving I turned an erratic, whisper signal into a nice 1775 KG3 copper. I also dug a strainer and what appears to be a reinforcing piece for attaching a handle to a large pot. Both came from what looked to be another one of those shallow fire pits with charcoal, brick, bones and oyster shells. But since it was so close to the main road I decided to leave it for a later time. I also recovered a couple pieces to 17th century spectacle buckles along with other assorted buckles and buttons. Kept waiting for another silver coin to turn up, but not today. The finds started dwindling toward the end of the hunt, so if I can make it back again before planting it'll be mostly cleaning up loose ends at the site.

The sword guard is an excellent find Bill. Even more interesting knowing that a Rev war captain lived there. Great digs, coins came out in good condition as well. Hope you are able to make it in there once more before planting time.

Thanks Abe. I'm pretty happy the end of the season is providing for a little bit of excitement after being stuck inside for several weeks back in Jan/Feb. Getting down to the wire now, though, but maybe I can pull another rabbit out of the hat before the fat lady sings. Best of luck to you.
