Thanks all for the banner votes. I didn't know what I had :dontknow: until I talked to my brother-in-law. He collects coins and has at least one of every date & mint mark pennies/censt ever minted except for 7, this 1877 is one of the 7 open slots in the collection. :occasion14:

The deal I had with the owner was that if I found 2 old similar coins he would take the less valuable. He's getting the 1st IHP I pulled on his property, an 1889 in a thank you card that will be mailed. He lives over 50 miles away from this local property.

Maybe I'll see if there is a coin collecting club in the county and see if they could grade the coin, I believe it teeters between VF & XF, but what do I know? ???

Isn't this the best hobby ever :icon_thumleft:

Loco-Digger... Congrats on a nice 1877 IHC find! Sorry that I did not post on this earlier and vote Banner! I had a health issue that I am still trying to wrap my' head around which I will post the details in the General Discussion forum. Back to the 1877 IHC, I believe it should clean up fairly nicely and might be a good candidate for Conservation by NCS and then authentication and grading by NGC. First, I would recommend a 5 minute bath in Acetone to arrest (stop) the verdigris (the green corrosion on it) and then let it soak in Extra Virgin Olive Oil for a week or so. When removed and while still covered with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, you should be able to get the remainder of the dirt and grime off of the coin with a Green Rose Thorn. Once done, rinse thoroughly with water, then pat dry between the folds of a soft towel. After that, it would be best to let it air dry for a few hours, then place it in a 2x2 protective coin holder. If you choose, then send it to NCS for conservation and once done, they will send it over to the NGC (coin grading side) of the company for authentication and grading. Due to the porosity of the surface of the coin, NGC may only give the coin a Details Grade or may actually give it a Net Grade. In any case, the coin appears to have F-15 to possibly VF-20 details and may get a a Details Grade in this range but if they Net Grade it, then it should get at least a VG-10 to possibly a F-15 Net Grade.

Again congrats and I would bet you will be heading back to the permission site very soon!

BTW I would NOT try to conserve this coin myself. That looks like natural emerald green patina and not verdigris which is lighter green powdery corrosion. If you soak it in OO you might stabilize the surfaces (if there is any corrosion( but you might also turn the patina black and the eye appeal would be much less. I would send it straight to Conservation by NCS.

Thanks JD19, I am not planning on doing anything to the coin in regards to cleaning. I will look into NCS, Thanks
