I Just Dug Up The Oldest Dog License I've Ever Seen!

In many years of metal detecting I've dug up a lot of dog tags / licenses, but never one as old as the one I found today! My previous record for
a dog tag was 1921, today the one I dug was dated 1881! I wonder if this one is a rare find? Also dug up 6 wheaties a a 1947 Rosie dime. Clad was
about $6.00. Two different parks were hunted today, I've hunted both areas before. It's amazing what you miss.....

That is a really sweet find. Congrats on the banner. I have never seen a dog license that old. You have done very well this year.

That dog license is amazing! I found a 1906 or 08 here in PA (called dog tax here) but 1881-82 blows that away!

Thanks! It's been a really good year for digs. Between that construction site with the 42 silvers and this dog tag, Wow!

Awesome tag! any dog tag that is 1899 or older is very sought after. Don't sell it cheap! I have some that are 1902, 03, 06, teens and older. Love finding them. My friend found one dated 1877 at a CW hunt in Virginia.

That is def a sweet find. Everyone is saying it would fetch quite a few bucks. I'm just curious as to what it may be worth. Any ideas?

WOW wow WOW wow WOW wow WOW!!! Such great finds ~ especially the 1881-1882 dog tag! so awesome. Dog tags are my favorite treasures to dig!

FYI ~ I have the newest edition of Dr. William Bones book US DOG LICENSE TAGS. The oldest known tag from San Fran. CA is dated 1878.

Pricing dog tags is tricky ~ there is no price guide books or catalogs for dog tags like there is for coins, currency, stamps, etc.

Dog tags are only worth how much a collector is willing to pay. I have found the best thing to do is list it on eBay ~ let the collectors make the price!
