Today I took a long drive out to an old school house that I've been wanting to hunt for a while. I got lucky and the property owner was home and was nice enough to let me on the property. My first impression is that the place was almost too well maintained and likely had a lot of fill dirt hauled in over the years. Most of these sites they have been picked clean or are full of zinc pennies and pull tabs, so I wasn't expecting much. After a lap around the building and a bit of trash I found a 1921 wheat penny. Then bang I found 3 coins in one hole that I never dreamed I'd find, a 1944 Australian Florin, a 1944 Australian penny, and a Philippine centavo. After some more roaming around I found 3 more wheat pennies, an old gold plated ring, and a 1888 Indian Head penny. What a day!

Nice finds. Wonder if the foreign coins were someone's show and tell

I have a bunch of foreign coins from my grandfather they also are holed. I believe he picked them up in his travels during the Korean War. May have been a little harder to keep track of coins in those times. Could be someone's WWII trophys

Upon further inspection, I believe this 1888 Indian Head Penny that I found looks like it might actually be an overstamp 1888/7. I placed it in mineral oil an plan to leave it for at least three days to see just how clean I can get it without removing the patina.

What do you guys recommend as far as getting it accurately identified?

Here's the best I could do with a camera phone and no major scrubbing beyond a nylon dish brush.
The close up is through my little jewelry spec.
What says you? It's it worth investigating further?

Is it an 1888/7 overstamp?
On second thought, I'll start a new thread in 'Coins'.
