Found another oddity today.... An 1871 counterfeit trade dollar... At a local smoke shop. I know nothing about these except for what I have read. Anybody have any info?

I guess the question would be, why do you feel it is a counterfeit? Cool find.

It looks silver plated with some brass showing through. It looks different than my silver coins.

The Chinese have counterfeited Trade Dollars to the point they have a dubious reputation with collectors unless there's clear legitimacy. Argh....

That sounds good enough for me. I guess a magnet test would also work.

That coin was highly counterfeited by the Chinese like Javadroid said. If you are a collector, you don't want to touch a coin like that unless its certified. It is a nice find though.

During the 80's I had a liking for trade dollars, really liked having one in my pocket all the time. But that was a long time ago, life changes and kicks our butts, and time passes.

Looking at the pictures, I can't pin it down, but that coin just doesn't look right to me.

Probably because they didn't start making Trade Dollars until 1873...................So definite fake! (I,too, didn't remember for sure & had to look in my Redbook.....:dontknow: )

Was this actually made in the 1800's? If so I may just keep it with relic collection for its historical value. Proof the human race has always been a bunch of scumbags ruining it for the rest of us. The same reason why we can't have nice things.

I doubt it was made in the 1800's...........All I have seen come from China.
