Went back to the circa 1800 house tonight with my son...headed directly for the spot where I dug the 3 Large Cents to get another look... ::)

Had a solid +95 Iron reading 6" from the spot the large's came from and decided to dig anyways...and glad I did!

Found the end of an iron butter knife...looks colonial...re-scanned the hole and got a +87 reading and out pops this beautiful 1Reale!! Couldn't believe it...now the coin spill is complete!

Looks to be 1785....but hard to tell...still beautiful to me!

Here's a shot of the 3 Large's after soaking in oil and their long lost silver friend...can anyone tell me how to get the green crust off old copper?

I'm guessing a long soak in oil is the only way not to hurt the detail on the coin.. ???

Thanks for all the great comments on this discovery..glad I have you all to share it with! ;D

Those large cents look great to me. I wouldn't do anything else if it were me. I can't find an IH or wheat around here that look that good.

Way to go on the Spanish silver!!

Thanks everyone! :)

The other side of the two outer large cents have a thick green crust on the Bust....the reverse of each coin is mint, so that's the side I used in the photo. ;)

It's more than patina....it's crust, thick, and hard...I know it can be scraped off...but don't want to do it that way.

Thanks for the help, :)

duh...duh... DFX
Outstanding recovery. Why not post a pic of the obverses showing the crust?
If it really crust and not the patina I'd continue the olive oil soak a while and then try removing it slowly with a toothpick.

perhaps (just a muse)
soak them OO
then freeze them over night then the next day
heat up some OO in the nuker
then drop in the frozen coins
repeat and see if the expanding (heat)
and contracting(freezing)knocks the crude off ???

Great "stuff" I never tried freezing but I have baked coins in the over at 250 degrees for about 15 min. and then drop in room temp olive oil(virgin olive oil)
