Great way to start the new year, I headed out to the woods in the freezing cold and spitting rain. Dug shotgun shells, lead, brass etc. Went to an area where there is no current trails or roads, but was cleared on a 1930's aerial photo hoping to find a cellar hole. Had no luck until i headed towards a current hay field and got a low 80's vdi which sounded kinda weak on the pro. I figured it would be a modern dime. A couple inches down I found this.

Didn't know exactly what it was till I rinsed it when I got home.

Piddled around the area for a bit longer without luck, got my hands and feet wet, which meant it was time to go home.

Anyone have a date for this?

Happy hunting to all.

Looks to be civil war era but I'm not familiar with that back mark. Hopefully somebody will know for certain.

Nice find. That's the older style eagle button. The newer one (1875-1905) is called an Indian Wars eagle button, and looks slightly different.

Congrats and good luck!
