First off, let me apologize for the poor quality photos. It was a very sunny day and I got too much glare off of the cement. Also, I really didn't find a whole lot to write home about. It was my first long hunt in a long time, and I wanted to share.

On Saturday, I hunted in two spots. The first spot was in the deepest part of the woods on my uncle's property. It borders a little trickle of a creek called the Black River. Once upon a time, it was a much larger and more free-flowing river. I was hunting along one of the old original banks of the river, which is probably a good 60 feet from where the river flows now. The only reason I was able to get back there is because my uncle recently cleared paths and trails throughout the woods to give his son a place to ride his four wheeler.

The second place was in the woods behind my neighbor's property. There is a huge oak tree back there - it would take three or four grown men to hug this thing. My grandfather once told me that when my great-grandfather owned the property, there were four one-room shacks around the tree where the seasonal pickers lived during harvesting season. My great-grandfather was a strawberry farmer. The tree kind of served as a centerpiece to a commons area in the middle of the shacks. My great-grandfather farmed the land from 1913 when he purchased it until the early 1950's.

Here are a couple of overall shots of what I found. The first picture are some of the more interesting items; the second is all of the iron rubbish that I dug. There is a clad penny in there for size comparison.

Here is the "what is it?" part of the post. This object was found back by the river. Any ideas what it could have been? It is iron.

This object was found by the old oak tree. It is grey in color and registered as a coin on my BH. At first I thought it may have been the handle to a ladel or something but I'm not sure.

Last is the butt end of a shotgun shell that I found near the river. Any ideas on how old it could be? It says "Winchester Repeater No. 12."

Congrats on the finds! lol, if you've seen any of the pics I've posted, I'm no one to be giving advice, but try the next ones in the shade if the sun is so bright. Looks like you found enough interesting items to continue searching that spot.

Hey PL,

Glad to see you got out for a spell, the weather was cool enough for detecting. In fact it was rather chilly in that cold wind. Looks like you got some old farm land to try and find a few relics. The 1st what's it is a hitch pin, still in use today. Not sure what the 2nd item is. Shotgun brass are fun to find, especially if they're older. Here's a website to ID those headstamps. http://members.shaw.ca/cartridge-corner/shotgun.htm

I had a little trouble with the glare but it seems like you got a nice variety of stuff. Maybe it belonged to your ancestors?

What I believe you have are a hitch pin, wire cutter/pliers and possibly an inside door latch from an old vehicle.

Now that you mention it, it could be. I showed it to my old man tonight and he thought the same thing. One of my neighbors is a car junkie. I'll show it to him, and he might be able to tell me for sure. Possibly even a car model.

Someone else who looked at it also suggested that it was a latch to a door or window on a house (i.e. the picker's shack).

That is why I like hunting around here. Odds are the things I find were lost by them, or came off of their farm equipment.
