Bucket list coin! 1831 Capped Bust Half Dollar!

Havenā€™t been out detecting a lot this year but got a new carbon shaft for my Equinox 600 from Steveā€™s Detector Rods last week and finally got out late today to try it out. Went to a site that I have been to many times and it is pretty worked over but wanted to get out and spend some time with the new detector rod. After a couple hours was getting ready to leave and figured would check along an old metal fence that just had some vegetation cut back from it before I left. Got a signal about 8-10ā€ from the fence at one point that jumped a lot but was getting some really great signals / high tone mixed in with the detector also picking up the fence. Had to dig under a large root and was deep at around 7-8ā€ until finally I pulled out a 1831 Capped Bust Half Dollar! This is my first Capped Bust and itā€™s in great condition. I still canā€™t believe it. This is one of my ā€œbucket listā€ coins I did not think I would ever find. Only coin I have thatā€™s older is a large cent. The Equinox again showed me how it can detect deep and am happy with the new carbon shaft from Steveā€™s Detector Rods. Thanks for looking, sorry the photos are all sideways. Not sure how that happened.

Gary, I didn't know that and thought it was an area that was just a little worn. Thanks for the information, I appreciate that!

GoDeep, the fence is between a church and a school yard. The church was built in 1848 but the property dates back to the 1700s. I was in the school yard side of the fence that the original schoolhouse was from 1872. That building is no longer there and the school yard has been metal detected for years. I think this coin being close to the metal fence and with the brush that was just cut helped keep it where it was all these years.

Thanks for the reply. Good information about the fence. I'd say you're dead on. I tend to avoid fences, but should probably just turn down the sensitivity a bit and not give up on them.

I pulled out a 1831 Draped Bust! This is my first Draped Bust and itā€™s in great condition.
Maybe it's just me, but I am a bit anal about accurate identification. You have a Capped Bust Half, not a Draped Bust Half. There is still time to correct your post....

Steve, I stand corrected. I can't believe I made that mistake and didn't pick up on it. It's not you as I try to be always accurate. Thank you for pointing that out and I corrected it immediately except can't seem to also edit the thread description.

Thanks for taking my comment the right way. Yeah, I haven't figured out how to edit a post title yet either :dontknow:

Wow Such nice condition. Great Find. I have never dug one, but bought an 1829 at a yard sale for a quarter! I have also found countless Susan B's and Sacagawea 's for a quarter as well. Nice Pull!
