Wow each week my coil seems to be swinging over the right spots and I get older and older coins. Last week it was the 2 cent piece, 1864. While I was sure that was as old as I would get for a while, boy was I wrong. While out today at a site where nearby are the remains of a home foundation, I found this on my first swing. Beat the 2 cent piece by 127 years! Oddly It was all I found all day.

But is it real? It has the date 1737 on it and appears to have been cut in half and re-joined. Can anyone tell me anymore about it? I know nothing about Spanish Reales.

Thanks for looking and Merry Christmas.

That is a beautiful piece and what a story it must have. Who cares if it's real/fake or what, it is an amazing find.
My guess is like the rest, two different coins soldered together.

Congrats :)

Very nice and unique find! I would speculate that it was put together later in
the coins life. After US coinage started to circulate freely throughout the US,
the actual weight of the silver was not as important, as to be able to pass a "full"
coin in a transaction. I read somewhere, that in the early to mid 1800's, store
owners started to not accept clipped coinage. Just my two (pieces) cents.

Such amazing luck. I am constantly in awe at what you come up with... my first swing and I got another square nail. Darn detector (posted in service forum looking for ideas). I'm tellin' ya, keep me around and I'll clean the garbage out for you ;D But after all this time, I did finally join the forums because of your find today, so there's a Reale benefit (har!). I can't believe my detector didn't even register that as anything decent when we tested it. *sigh* What a nice pretty find.... [insert great amounts of envy here]

Looks like the Reale deal, but 2 pieces somehow put back together...Can not tell, but by the green aging, I would say it was brazed, or maybe low grade silver solder....Who knows...might even be stuperglue...

:D :D :D :D :D 8)

This could very well have been the case... and it is a very interesting idea. So because the two halves were worthless as they were, someone just joined them together to make a useable coin. This is a great find, and it is quite intriguing too!

Bravo!

WOW WOW !! What a kick butt find !!

I agree with Daydream , only way they could join two halves together is silver solder and a fantastic soldering job at that !!

After reading that PDF it sure would sound like this would be the case, as the value of the pistareen started to decline and its use diminished.

Great find! Was the 17 side older than the other half? Guess we'll never know.
