Found this on Sunday when we went back to the site of the Vermont copper. Had absolutely no idea, but with the help of PBK and Treasure Net, they positively ID'd this for me. I'm ASTOUNDED and speachless but I'll try. :D ;D. When I took this from the ground I told my brother I found an old jackknife.(NO KIDDING) After about 2 hrs. in my pocket I took it out again and wiped the dirt off to find it said "Artillery". Never thought it was Revolutionary War, Never mind BRITISH! Many thanks to PBK and ALL who helped ID this Fabulous relic and piece of our nations early history! I guess there is alot that goes on behind the scenes of T-Net that we never see. Now I know! Will post this in BEST FINDS for sure, and with my post here hopefully my second BANNER find in a week. I guess, from what other T-Netters have already posted and mailed me about this, I may have surpassed the "Vermontensium" Vermont copper find, that I thought I never would. Hopefully there are more Revolutionary War relics at this spot we can share with all of you. Good Luck to ALL and I'm so wound up I don't know whether or not I'll be able to sleep tonight. (not kidding on this one either!) HOGGE

That is a find of a lifetime! Congrats! I don't know why this would not be a banner item?

By the way does anyone know if there is there a banner guideline listed here?

Here are your guidelines.....I'm guessing better pictures, the find is perfect. The one picture doesn't do the find the justice it deserves! Get more pictures, we wanna see this up top!

True... 1 inch is not such a large file

Finds must be significant, and plausible.
Images must be hosted on the TreasureNet server.
Posts with great stories are more likely to be selected.
If the post is one of the members first posts, it is less likely to be selected.
We make no guarantees as to the accuracy, or authenticity of the finds.
Finds must look good in the banner

I think you are right. The picture is a little blurry. Maybe they just need a better quality picture. Post a bunch more.

I don't think it would be too blurry when shrunk to an inch. :D

Hey Hogge that is a KICK BUTT find :icon_thumright: :notworthy: :occasion14: :icon_thumleft:

Tough enough to find Rev war relics let alone marked and identifible . I've found some nice things 8)

I dont know where in western MA you live but if your near the Ma / Ny boarder then your in lands that saw major activity with the Hudson river - Lake Champlain - Lake George corridor. Fort Ticonderoga , Fort Ann , Battle of Bennington , Saratoga , its PRIME area for Rev war relics.
Just the fact that Benedict Arnold / Ethan Allen took Ticonderoga and hauled all the artillery back to Dorchester Heights in Boston to me is an unbelievable undertaking , your find may have come from that !! Who knows what route back to Boston they took :dontknow: ( doubt it was the Mass Pike :laughing1: )

So Congrats on a SWEET relic :headbang:

I'd like to find out the meanings of the numbers, what Regiment, and what the letters actually stand for. Is 53 the number of the specific gun or person or Regiment.

As previously stated in "What Is It," this is a British artillery cartridge box sling belt tip. A similar example, marked "ROYL ARTILLY NO. 105" is pictured on page 225 of Neumann & Kravic's Collector's Encyclopedia of the American Revolution. It is 1st Battalion (I believe there were four or five battalions of Royal Artillery, but will defer to our resident Rev. War experts); the 53 is an equipment number (i.e., a "rack number" or ID number) indicating the man to whom it was issued.

Update:

The Royal Artillery was composed of four battalions, each containing eight companies. A company totaled 116 officers and men, of whom 18 were gunners and 73 were matrosses (apprentice gunners) who carried fusils to guard the guns and wagons. Civilians were normally hired to act as drivers. Artillerymen wore blue regimental coats faced in red. Each infantry regiment customarily had two 3 lb guns allotted to it, which were known as battalion guns.http://www.cvco.org/sigs/reg64/intro.html

PBK, Your wealth of knowledge never ceases to amaze me. How you come up with all of this information, I will never know. Can I apprentice for about a week?? ;D

Hogge,

You should do your research and find out everything you can about the 1st Battalion, and find out WHO the belt was issued to and research his genealogy and what battles he saw. Then write an article for a reputable magazine and it WILL get published! The Banner here is small stuff. Don't sweat it. :)

Ok, when I see someone hit the banner twice in a week I'm inspired to get out there and help try and kick him off. :D Looks like I'll take my shot this weekend.

Awesome! I'm so glad to see it made it onto the BANNER! There is no doubt it is worth it.

Now tell me..... Have you been back to the spot to hunt again?

Love that Rev artifact Hogge.

I hope at some point here I'll hit some Rev items. Lots of activity was going on here. The battle of braddock happened right in my city. I'll hit some at some point. Until then I'll take whatever colonial stuff I can find.
