When the tree was younger it got sun scald. That caused it to crack yet not die. Common with maples. Also looks like it was pecked on by woodpeckers......

Thanks for the knowledge. I initially thought maybe it was struck by lightning. Then, through a misunderstanding, I thought my friend said it looked like a KGB tree & I tried to beat the truth out of it. Then, I realized he said "KGC" & thought "EUREKA!" LOL! Now I'm thinking it has a parasite & may need to take a hike... But, more to the point, I'm thinking... HOW AWESOME TO FINALLY GET THE ANSWER! Thanks SO much!
