Thumb latch for a gate?
Hi there all,
Dug this on as farm where I have dug a colonial opper and clad coinage. Any ideas on what it came from? I thought it was from a flintloce rifle where the flint would strike the plate to provide a spark, but apparently I was wrong!

Thanks for lookin!

Re: Flintlock piece, possible ID?
That looks more like a pot metal gate latch button. Not flintlock.
It looks like a thumb gate latch piece for a wooden fence gate. http://www.drillspot.com/products/29...umb_Gate_Latch

Re: Flintlock piece, possible ID? - solved - thumb latch for a gate
I think this one got the green check a little too soon. It looks a little like the lever to a latch, but when you dismantle a gate latch, door latch, etc., they are nothing like this object. For one thing, this is far too small. For another it has a more complicated mechanism (probably drilled for a small spring and riding on the longer groove. As well, the smaller end is sized and curved and very narrow for a forefinger to pull rather than push. (you would imagine the large end would be curved for a thumb also, if this was a latch). Don't know what it is though Cap gun comes to mind, but the mechanism is unlike any I've seen.

The green check may be too soon. I would have waited for other guesses and opinions because I have not furnished an exact match.
As far as the size I didnt realize it was small. The finger is almost to size. I guess it depends what finger it is. The smaller end looks OK to me. I think you simply lift. Maybe someone will dissassemble theres at home.
As far as it being flintlock, I dont think they used pot metal or aluminum. I dont know what part of a flinlock this would be. Maybe toy but an odd trigger (or hammer). I still think its for a door.

OK I see now my bad. We are looking at the middle finger. (I thought it was a thumb). The hammer is about the size of a dime and johnnyi is correct too small for a door thumb latch. The other side does resemble a toy cap gun trigger.

K, I removed the green check. I thought it waas the plate that the flint struck on an old flintlock rifle. Admittedly, if it's not a deer rifle, shotgun, or a semi-auto handgun, I know next to nothing about guns.

Trigger to an old cap gun toy, that is what I saw immediately. those old guns were made of pot metal
and fell apart really easily after being lost in the great outdoors for any length of time.
I have dug many many parts to toy pistols.... that is what this is..
